COVID-19 Testing Q&A

What is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing determines if you have the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Testing for COVID-19 not only tells you whether you need to quarantine or seek treatment, it also gives public health care organizations the information they need to determine exactly where COVID-19 is spreading.

What happens during COVID-19 testing?

During COVID-19 testing, the team at Brooklyn Health Medical Alliance takes a swab of your respiratory tract. There are two types of diagnostic tests for COVID-19:

Molecular test

Also called a NAAT or RT-PCR test, the molecular COVID-19 test involves taking either nasal or nasopharyngeal swabs. This means your provider swabs your nasal passages or the space in your throat located behind your nose.

A molecular test is quick and highly accurate. You should receive your results within one week.

Antigen test

Like the molecular test, the antigen test involves swabbing your nasal or nasopharyngeal passages. The test itself is quick and produces fast results within just 15-30 minutes.

The results of an antigen test may not be as accurate as the molecular test. It’s more likely to return with false negative results.

Who needs COVID-19 testing?

It’s important to schedule COVID-19 testing if you’ve recently come in close contact (within six feet) of somebody with a confirmed case of the viral infection. You’re more likely to contract the virus if you’ve been in an enclosed space with a confirmed case for 15 minutes or more.

You should also seek a COVID-19 test if you’re experiencing any symptoms, such as:

  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle aches
  • Lost sense of taste or smell
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Congestion

While these symptoms can be attributed to other conditions, such as the common cold or flu, testing is essential for preventing the spread of COVID-19.

What happens if I receive a positive result after COVID-19 testing?

The CDC recommends quarantining for up to 14 days, regardless of your symptoms, if you test positive for COVID-19. This is the only way to ensure you’re not spreading the viral infection to others.

Make sure to rest and stay hydrated if you’re experiencing COVID-19 symptoms. Should your symptoms worsen, call the team at Brooklyn Health Medical Alliance right away. If you experience sudden trouble breathing, seek emergency care.
